Del Mar Rendezvous – SDRW 2012

ImageDisclosure: Our meal was complimentary, but I was not compensated for this review. As always, all opinions are my own.

San Diego Restaurant Week is here, once again. If there was a restaurant you missed the last time, now’s your chance to visit. If there’s a favorite spot you’re looking to score a deal, now’s the time to make your reservation. If you’re a fan of honey walnut shrimp, boy do I have the place for you.

Del Mar Rendezvous invited us to preview their SDRW menu, which is happily full of dishes on their regular menu plus a couple of extras.

Because I wrote about the tasty, tasty food before, I tried to pick out some different dishes to try.

San Diego County Fair 2012

I LOVE the County Fair. I know people who have lived in San Diego for decades and have never been to the Fair and then they look at me like I’m crazy when I tell them we go every year.  Sometimes more than once, depending on what’s going on and whether we get free tickets or not.  We also have a checklist of things to see/eat that must be done:

  • Visit the Collections exhibits
  • Watch the pig races
  • Eat grilled corn
  • Walk to the infield at least once (gotta get some exercise in!)
  • Eat mini donuts with a carton of milk
  • Walk through the vendor buildings
  • Eat deep-fried cheese curds (this is one of Travis’ requests)
  • Visit the garden exhibits
  • Eat at least one new deep-fried something
  • Look at the cute goats

SHIMBASHI Izakaya – Del Mar

Disclosure: Our meal was complimentary, but I was not compensated for this review. As always, all opinions are my own.

My office isn’t that far from Del Mar, but I still rarely find myself taking advantage of the delicious restaurants we’ve recently discovered. Some of it is because it’s just a hair too far away for a quick lunch break; the other part is because after work I just want to go home, which is in a completely different direction than Del Mar. When I was offered an opportunity to explore the menu at Shimbashi Izakaya, I figured I might as well expand my list of Del Mar dining options.

What I’m learning is that we should be spending more time in Del Mar eating…

Del Mar Rendezvous

Disclosure: Our meal was complimentary but I was not compensated for this review. As always, all opinions are my own.

Sooo… happy New Year?  I’m not really going to apologize for ignoring this blog for weeks on end.  Life got busy, but the fun kind of busy, and life in the sunshine takes precedent over internet musings any day.  Besides, I was just giving you plenty of time to go make your own tomato jam and candied jalapenos (which I have been enjoying with Brie and waffles as a lazy leftover lunch).

We’ve been doing a fair amount of eating out, thanks to hectic schedules, odd hot wing cravings, and restaurant coupon expiration dates (not all in the same visit).  But the visits have been about eating, ending my hunger, and not really about blogging.   But then Jennifer Jenkins at BAM Communications asked if I’d like to review the menu at Del Mar Rendezvous prior to San Diego Restaurant Week. I have to be honest, it’s been a couple of years since we’ve participated in SDRW.  And we probably won’t make it this month, what with a short weekend trip out of town, my birthday, and a pending baby arrival (not mine!) I was also considering whether or not I wanted to review a restaurant in Del Mar, since we don’t really get up there very often (although, now that I work up there, it’s more feasible).

Spoiler alert: I accepted, we dined, and I’m so glad we did. You’ll be glad, too, since I now have a fun giveaway for you!
