I didn’t really know what to expect when Smashburger came to town, and I still haven’t actually had a burger there, but their chicken dishes are quite tasty. I still like that you can get a good lunch for a decent price, but I don’t often get to Mission Valley during lunch time (that’s the closest one to my office). So, when I heard that one is scheduled to open in Rancho Penasquitos (and later one in Kearny Mesa) I got pretty excited. It’s not close to work. but it’s definitely closer to home, which means we’re more likely to stop by after work or on the weekend.
Full press release here; standard PR language follows:
Smashburger, a fast-casual “better burger” restaurant is gearing up to open its fifth San Diego location on Saturday, August 6, 2011. The restaurant will open in Rancho Peñasquitos at 13219 Black Mountain Road, Suite 7. This is the fifth of eight San Diego Smashburger locations slated to open in the next year. San Diego’s other Smashburger restaurants are located in La Jolla, Del Mar, Mission Valley and Downtown’s East Village.
Named for the cooking method used to create delicious burgers, a Smashburger is 100-percent—fresh, never frozen, Certified Angus Beef smashed on a flat grill to sear in the juicy flavor. To further the “better burger” experience, every Smashburger is served on a butter toasted artisan bun and topped with a selection of real cheeses, the freshest produce, and top-quality condiments.
Smashburger San Diego features a regional menu created with the best regional flavors and tastes in mind. The San Diego regional menu includes:
- The signature San Diego Smashburger featuring fresh avocado, fresh cilantro and onions, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, sour cream and chipotle mayo on a torta roll, served with a wedge of lime.
- The BBQ Ranch chicken sandwich featuring grilled or crispy chicken breast with applewood smoked bacon, haystack onions, lettuce, tomato, bbq sauce and ranch dressing on an egg bun.
- The Sunset salad featuring a fresh mix of garden greens topped with strips of grilled or crispy chicken, sliced marinated balsamic tomatoes, raisins, cranberries, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, blue cheese, served with balsamic vinaigrette dressing.
- Regional microbrews from San Diego-based breweries as well as wine from California-based wineries.
We are excited to introduce Smashburger to people in Rancho Peñasquitos,” says Founder and Chief Concept Officer, Tom Ryan. “Guests in our other restaurants in San Diego give us great feedback on our localized specialty menu.”

Thanks for the heads up! I haven’t been to Smashburger yet, and this location is close to home.
It’s close to home for us, too! I can’t wait for it to open!
I really like everything here- especially the sides..um SmashSides. Best ‘chain’ food around; Burgers, chicken, hotdogs, salads and chili.
I’m looking forward to trying more of their menu. Sometimes, I find something I like and I just can’t seem to get anything else!
