cook vs. dine

Things I don’t order in restaurants any more because I can either cook it at home for less, cook it better than they can, or both:

  • rack of lamb
  • grilled ribeyes and filets
  • shrimp scampi
  • seared scallops
  • tiramisu
  • German Chocolate Cake
  • bruschetta
  • shrimp cocktail

Things I order from restaurants because they do it better or it’s too much work for me to do at home:

  • osso bucco
  • roasted bone marrow (occasionally, I’ll make this at home from bones from the butcher, but I prefer someone else to make it for me)
  • lobster
  • crab boils (maybe one day this will change)
  • creme brulee
  • dol sot bibimbap
  • ama ebi (sweet raw shrimp), with the fried heads
  • Peking duck
  • any duck dish

Things I can cook at home, and do, but also buy/order from restaurants because I can:

  • braised short ribs
  • Korean bbq (plus, I never have as many panchan dishes)
  • sushi, sashimi, and that chili citrus yellowtail that T loves (which is just so stupidly easy and cheap to make but we still order it when we go out for sushi)
  • prime rib, because how often do you have 10 people to feed?
  • roast chicken (yes, easy and cheap, but Costco does it for you for, like, $6!)
