I’m sad to say that the Handi-Vac is being discontinued. I only noticed a few weeks ago that I couldn’t find the bags at Wal-Mart. Then I didn’t see them at Vons. I first heard of the news on Chowhound and then I did some digging (didn’t have to dig far, as you can see).
I’ve snatched up a couple of the quart-size bags as I see them, and we picked up a box of gallon bags last night. I still find them useful, but I guess the general public didn’t agree. We also have the Ziploc hand-pump vacuum and stores seem to have plenty of their bags (for now). So maybe we’ll switch to that, although I think I like Reynolds better.
The Handivac will work on Ziplock bags. You do not have to remove the sticky patch over the suction hole. Instead of placing the bag on a flat surface, hold the bag over the end of your finger at the back of the suction spot and apply the handivac. The tip of your finger will open the sealer a little from the back side pressure of your finger and allow the vacuum! Tried it last night…takes a little practice but it works like a charm!
Good to know. I’ll have to give that a try with the Ziploc bags we have at home!
