There are quite a few programs I’m part of, most of which send products for reviews and testing. As part of Foodbuzz’s Tastemaker program, I was sent a few of Quaker’s new True Delight granola bars. You may have seen ads for them – they look all decadent and made of pure, wholesome ingredients. We tried the Dark Chocolate Raspberry Almond, Toasted Coconut Banana Macadamia Nut, and Honey Roasted Cashew Mixed Berry. I thought I would like the Raspberry Almond the best, but I liked the Coconut Banana one. I think because it’s so hard to find banana-flavored products that taste like banana but without the artificial aftertaste. The Honey Roasted Cashew took second place. Maybe because it was something different… you can always find a granola bar with almonds in it.
The new granola bars are good; they’re not too sweet, but they’re sweet enough for an afternoon snack. There are plenty of whole nuts, which means it’s substantial to get you through mealtimes. I don’t think it’s enough for breakfast, though. Maybe with a small cup of yogurt or a piece of fruit.
One bar is 140 calories, so it’s not exactly a low-calorie snack, but I guess it’s better than chowing down on a brownie or something, especially if you’re eating the Dark Chocolate Raspberry Almond, which does have substantial chunks of chocolate.
Speaking of brownies, I made a batch of cream cheese brownies (from the Cook’s Illustrated cookbook) when Jeff came over to watch South Park (which comes on earlier on the HD channel – early AND high definition!) Guests are the best excuse to make decadent baked goods. We had 4 of the chocolate covered peppermint Jo Joes left over, so I chopped those up and added them to the batter. Then, I baked them in my Baker’s Edge pan so maximize the chewy corners (chewy cream cheese corners are the best). So good. I ate two all by myself, wrapped two up for Jeff to take home, wrapped others up for the freezer, then took one to work and stuffed it in the fridge so it would be cold and fudgy by the time I got an afternoon chocolate craving. Because I didn’t have a Dark Chocolate Raspberry Almond granola bar in my desk.
