More chains in Poway

A couple of years ago, the Boll Weevil in Poway closed down. Well, first they were constantly out of their ice cream brown betty desserts, then they closed down, presumably because they weren’t making enough to meet rent for the large space next to the Ultrastar theater. The empty space stayed that way for such a long time that I wondered if it would ever get filled. I also hoped a new restaurant would take its place so we could have more pre-movie options, although I’m always happy to eat at Cafe de Thai.

Today, as I was returning a movie to Blockbuster, I noticed some banners and signs over the space. I drove by and noticed a Jamba Juice “Now Hiring” sign and a Chipotle “Grand Opening” sign. One one hand, I’m pretty excited because I like Jamba Juice (sorry, Robeks) and Chipotle but the closest ones are in Carmel Mountain and Mira Mesa, respectively. Now they are just a walk away! On the other hand, I’m sad to see big chain stores go in when we could have had something new and different. But, perhaps, something new and different wouldn’t be right for that little strip mall area.

I don’t know when the Jamba Juice will be opening its doors, but the Chipotle grand opening is scheduled for September 14, just in time to start the weekend for Poway Days!

(update: Chipotle is having a 2-day opening, on the 13th and 14th, with free burritos on Thursday, 11am to 8pm and other free giveaways on Friday including a drawing for free burritos for a year!)
